Personal branding is the calling card of successful business owners and professionals today. Since its advent a few years ago, personal branding has become the smart tool for standing out and getting noticed. In today’s connected, digital age, establishing a digital footprint is an important part of building your personal brand by design. That is because many potential clients, employers, and others research you online to determine whether to do business with, hire, or promote you. If your digital footprint is lacking, the opportunities will be also.
The personal brand is what attracts the attention that allows you to get hired to show your client or employer how great you are at what you do.
So how do you build a digital footprint that speaks for you, your capabilities, and attracts the opportunities you seek? In my Magnetic Visibility Coaching Program, I guide you through the seven essential steps to building a personal brand and getting known online and in the real world. I speak specifically to your digital footprint, as I help you get yours in order.
If you want to attract clients and customers and compete on something other than the lowest price, then you’ll need a personal brand. If you want to rise in your career, then you’ll need a personal brand for that, too. Your personal brand is, simply, how you market yourself. It’s how you are known.
Why good work no longer is a distinguishing feature
You are good at your thing. So what?! It used to be that good work was enough of a calling card, but in today’s digital age when any Google search can turn up myriad service providers who are just as good as you, being good is simply the cost of entry! Today, the personal brand is the distinguishing characteristic that attracts an audience, inspires trust, and woos clients and customers. Your personal brand is what others use to judge your capabilities and those of your service business.
And we all know people pay more for brands — you likely have made a buying decision just recently where you chose to go with the name-brand instead of the nondescript, generic option. Why? Because you trusted the brand would be a better choice for your situation. So it is with your potential clients and customers. If you have a personal brand, then that can help them choose you over the nondescript competitor. And they may choose to work with or hire you, even though your rate is higher and they could get a cheaper solution elsewhere. They may make that decision because they trust your brand in a way they don’t trust the competitor who hasn’t taken the time to build a personal brand to stand out.
Building a credible personal brand isn’t just about shoving out content, throwing up a website, or spouting off on social media. Many people are doing that and find they are no closer to building the personal brands they desire than when they started. Building a credible personal brand takes a strategic approach. You must know why you are doing what you are doing, who it is you intend to reach, and what it is you offer and that makes you special. The content you create and the activities you engage in must tell a story.
And because building your personal brand is so critical to your success if you want to rise beyond your current level, you want to invest in doing it right. You want to learn how to do it, rather than stumble around it. You want to maximize your time and let today’s actions position you for big rewards down the line.
